MotoGP World Champion, Valentino “The Doctor” Rossi, states that 2021 is a “very important season” for him. He explained that it would be key to deciding whether he will participate in the MotoGP for the 27th time next year. The seven-time premier class world champion is currently going through a transitionary phase this season, taking residence away from the works team at Petronas Yamaha SRT.

Yamaha decided to lock Fabio Quartararo in his place prior to the season. This was due to Rossi’s uncertainty about continuing after 2020. Regardless of the outcome of the one-year agreement, his goal is to fight for the Grand Prix victories.

Expectations

“It’s life, 26 seasons is very long,” states Rossi in regards to expectations for 2021.

“But I don’t race just to spend time. This is a very important season for me because I come from the last two seasons – ’19 and ’20 – that are less than what I expected, especially in the result.”

“The results will be important, will be the key. I want to be stronger, I want to be more competitive than in the last two years, fighting for the podium, fighting to win races and trying to be competitive throughout all the season.” the world champion said.

“I hope that the season also if the COVID is not fixed will be more normal than last year, that we can use all the different tracks in the right period.”

“And the target is to be strong, be competitive from the beginning to the end.”

The decision

Whether or not Valentino Rossi gets to participate in 2022 is outlined in his current contract, dependant on the performance clauses. He explains that he needs to decide on his future during the summer break, much like last year prior for the COVID-19 delay.

“I will decide during the summer break. So, in the middle of the season.” states Rossi.

“I want to make half a season and then my decision is from the result. If I’m strong and if I can fight for the podium, I can fight for the victory, I can continue for another year. Or, if not, no. So, I will decide around summer.”

Rossi reiterates that its “not an easy decision” and that everything will be dependant on the results of this year.

“I think if I can be competitive, if I can fight for the victory, for the podium, I can continue also another year.”

“But this is my idea. I don’t speak with the team, I don’t speak with Yamaha. Maybe they say to me I don’t have a decision! It’s possible.”

“It will change a lot my life, but I am not very worried. I know I’ve had a long, long career and I’m happy.”

The future

SRT is currently discussing a new agreement with Yamaha for the next team cycle, spanning from 2022-2026. Fortunately all tension between the two parties has settled after a post-season debrief.

Tomorrow night (AEST) the Shakedown Test takes place at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit, prior to the first Official Test the next night.
